The French, quite gambling and purposeful in nature, became the founders of many sports in Europe. It was in France at the end of the 19th century that the National Olympic Committee came into being under the leadership of the local nobleman Pierre Coubertin, who revived the ancient Olympiad in its new capacity under the unofficial motto: “Sport instead of war!”.
